Sophia was born in the small German town of Ankum. She was the fourth of six children born to Johann Friederich and Maria Wessendorf Von Bokern. In 1875, along with her future husband John Taphorn, she immigrated to the US onboard the passenger ship Ohio. After arriving at Baltimore, Maryland, on 12 Jun 1875, the couple settled in Louisville, Kentucky, where her sisters Maria, Bernadina and Elizabeth lived. The couple had eight children: Frederick, Catherine, Sophia, Elizabeth, John, Joseph, Herminia and another son also named Joseph. Sophia died of pulmonary edema.
