John was the fifth of eight children born to John Taphorn and Sophia Von Bokern. In 1915, he married Mary Tobler and they had one son, John E. For many years he was the proprietor of a soft drink shop and later a bar and restaurant in the Germantown section of Louisville, KY. He died of an esophageal hemorrhage.
