IN MEMORY OF THOMAS P. JARVIS
Thomas P. Jarvis, born at Minnora, Calhoun County, 10 December 1841, died near Oka, 14 July 1919, age 77 years, 7 months and 4 days. Mr Jarvis was married twice. His first wife being Miss Martha A. Barber, of Braxton County and to this union six children were born; John, now living and W. J., Tom, Mrs. Catherine Douglas, Mrs Tude Tanner, and Elzera, now dead.
His second wife was L. J. Mollahan. She is still living and to this union were born fourteen children; Nathan, of Newton, Robert of Newton, and Spencer of Oka, Mrs. Minerva Haverty and Mrs. Prusha Williams, of Akron, OH, Mrs. Ettie Boothe of Spencer, OH. The following have preceeded Mr Jarvis to the great beyond:
Mrs. L. J. Boothe, Mrs Elmira Hensley, Calvin, Miss Ida, Mrs. Florence Hunt, and Mrs. Nettie Lloyd.
Mr. Jarvis served three years as a Federal soldier in the Civil War and was an orderly on the staff of General DeVare; was in thirteen engagements besides minor skirmishes and received three gunshot wounds. He participated in the Battles of Cloyds Mt., Lynchburg and Gettysburg.
After being discharged from the army he turned his attention to farming and was very successful having acquired about 1,200 acres of good grazing land which was well stocked.
Mr. Jarvis was a Methodist.
