Charles Lashley HILLYER was born into a family of dairy farmers. After his family moved to Biddenden, Kent, England, he took up that profession, and met and married Eliza DEAN.
Later they moved to Woodchurch where Charles Lashley lived with his growing family where, as the Farm Bailiff, he managed Brickwall Dairy Farm on Susan's Hill Road.
In about 1866-7 he left the farm and became a Licensed Victualler (an innkeeper licensed to sell alcohol) at the Bonny Cravat pub in Woodchurch, Kent, England. He is listed as an Innkeeper/Publican from 1865 to 1872 on the Woodchurch Local and Family History website.
1st married Eliza DEAN on 16 Sep 1844 in Biddenden, Kent, England. They had the following children:

On the 1990 US Census for Franklinville, Charles is living with his daughter, Susannah, and listed as married for 1 year, but it is believed that should be a 7.)
He died in Franklinville, while visiting his daughter, Susannah Hillyer CAMPBELL and her family.
However, he was buried in Olean, Cattaraugus County, NY where he had been living with his daughter, Elizabeth Hillyer TURNER and her family.
