She was born Jan. 31, 1911 in Rock Creek, Idaho. A daughter of Albert Oliver and Almira Jane Bradley Cloward. She married Alfonzo "Pete" Akelund on Feb. 7, 1930 in Leota. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple on Dec. 18, 1964. Pete died August 7, 1973.
Marj was a homemaker and a member of the LDS Church, she attended Vernal 4th Ward. She was a visiting teacher for 49 years. She taught and was secretary in Primary from 1973 to 1983. She taught a class in MIA, and was quilt chairman from 1960 to 1964. She helped take care of flowers with Virginia Kay for funerals and worked in the library. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, going on picnics, writing histories and doing crafts and quilts.
Marj was preceded in death by her husband, Alfonzo Akelund; a son, Willis Dean Akelund; five grandchildren, Michael Cooper, Preston Cooper, Chad Akelund, Colleen Shiflett and Brent Shiflett; one brother, Bradley Cloward; two sisters, Blanche Rudy and Viola Burns; and her parents, Albert and Almira Cloward.
She is survived by her children, Shirley (Norman) Barnett, Palmdale, Calif.; LaRaine (Joe) Murray, Vernal; Velda Wilkins, Jensen; Tonna (Lewis) Shiflett, Vernal; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 12 great great-grandchildren;
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 15, at 11 a.m. In the Vernal 4th Ward LDS Chapel, 235 E. 600 S.
Friends may call Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Thomson Blackburn Vernal Mortuary and Thursday from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the church.
Interment will be at the Vernal Memorial Park under the direction of Thomson-Blackburn Vernal Mortuary.
