Velma Maurien Braun was the third child of Peter A. and Margaret (Klassen) Braun and was born in Kirk Colorado on Oct 14 1918; and she died at home at age 60 on Tuesday Sep 24 1979 in Reedley California. Maurien moved with her parents and family to Reedley CA in 1935, and she graduated from Reedley High School. She later married Henry "Hank" Sawatzky on Sep 27 1940 in Reedley California and soon after moved to Oregon where Hank was serving in the U.S. Army at Camp White near Medford and where their first son Ray Allen was born. After the war, Hank and Maurien moved their family back to Reedley where he began his career in the automotive repair field. Maurine worked occasionally in local packing houses, and she worked for a time in the kitchen of a local assisted living facility where she was a favorite of residents because she understood and spoke Low German. Her husband Hank was employed as a mechanic at Willems Buick Pontiac dealership in Dinuba, working there for 20+ years. A second son, Richard, was born in September 1949. During most of Maurien's married years, she worked mostly in the family home. Maurien was the first of her siblings to die, and she died suddenly in her backyard while hanging clothes to dry. Maurien was survived by Hank her loving husband of nearly 40 years; her sons Ray and Richard of Fresno; 2 brothers who lived in Oregon, Calvin of Lincoln City and Franklin of Salem, and a 3rd brother James of Dinuba California; and three sisters, Esther (Braun) Ratzlaff of Kingsburg, Dorothy Braun of Reedley and Caroline (Braun) Gilstrap of Selma. Burial was in the Reedley Cemetery and funeral arrangements were handled by Cairns Funeral Home of Reedley.
