Jim Smith had a secondary education, went to school first in the Beulah Community, then to an academy in Gatesville, Texas, run by his father's cousin, Professor Frank P Crow. Jim Smith had no military service.
Numerous honors were awarded to Jim Smith. At the time of his death, the city of San Antonio commissioners stood adjourned and resolutions were sent to his family. All departments closed for the day.
On January 12, 1936, the Jim Smith Memorial Hospital, built by Drs. John S Wootters, Paul B Stokes, Sam D Barclay and RS Traylor was officially opened and dedicated.
Jim Smith married Alice Augusta Hill. Their children: Jim Henry Jr, born 1903; Mary Frank born 1906; Albert Hill Smith born 1909 and Alice Olivia born 1914.
