Gilbert C. Baumgarten, age 93 of Reedsburg died on Tuesday, August 24, 2010 in the Sauk County Health Care Center, Reedsburg. He was born on November 6, 1916 in Westfield Township, Sauk County, the son of Albert and Ella (Uphoff) Baumgarten. He was married to Irene Gurgel on August 17, 1941. This marriage was blessed with five children. Gilbert farmed during his lifetime as well as being a butcher for Bob Banks and Straka Meats. He was a good and faithful member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Rock Springs, serving on several boards, ushering and singing in the choir. He enjoyed spending time with his family, helping his neighbors, his family and anyone else who was in need. He liked to tinker with things and always was curious about how things work, but he was especially proud of the gardens he had over the years. Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Irene on December 13, 2009; a sister, Leola Ball, and a brother, Oscar Baumgarten.

He is survived by his children Thomas (Mary) Baumgarten of Reedsburg, Linda Baumgarten (John Watson) of Williamsburg, Va., Diane (David) Gade of Reedsburg, Gary (Rose) Baumgarten of Onalaska, Myrna (Jim) Weickgenant of Baraboo, grandchildren Angela (Dan) Kilbert, Elizabeth (Damien) Stevens, Rebecca (Josh) Savoy, Jessica (Christopher) Jenkins, Alison Baumgarten,(Kode Ethridge), Zack and Jordan Taylor, step-grandchildren Norm and Cathy Couture, Nichole (Tyson) Marquardt, Erica Weickgenant, four step-great-granndchildren, his sister Mildred Palenshus of Ohio, sisters-in-law Shirley Baumgarten of North Freedom, Laura Joachin of Baraboo, Delores Steinhorst of Baraboo and Marion (Earl) Powers of Baraboo, brother-in-law Martin Gurgel of Baraboo, nieces, nephews along with other relatives and friends.
