Obituary
Former West Hill Resident Dead
"James Henry McCLUER, who was born on West Hill, October 7, 1860, and who lived there until he was 23 years of age, died at his home in South Pasadena, Calif. He left this vicienity about 50 years ago. He was a descendant of Joseph McCluer, one of the first settlers in these parts. The following is taken from a South Pasadena Paper.
"James Henry McCLUER, resident of South Pasadena since 1897, dropped dead Sunday morning when he went into the yard to bring some firewood into the house. He was apparently in the best of health. He arose at the usual time, read the paper and remarked to his wife that he would bring in the wood then go down to the fire station, where he was a daily visitor. Death came as he stooped over to pick up the wood. Dr. Olive Bondies and the inhalator squad of the fire department worked vainly for half an hour to revive him.

Mr. McCLUER, who followed the occupation of oil driller for more than thirty years, was with the Burma Oil Company in India from 1914 to 1918. He retired from the oil industry in 1923 and has since lived a retired life. He usually spent several hours a day at the fire station talking with the firemen or playing checkers with them. He was their beloved friend whom they affectionately called "Uncle Jimmie."

Mr. McCLUER is survived by this wife, Mrs. Kate McCLUER, a son Charles McCLUER, 1117 Oxley Street, and one daughter, Mrs. Avery E. TURNER, 1024 Glendon Way. Three brothers, Frank McCLUER of Warren, Ohio and John and Del McCLUER of Olean, New York, also survive.

Mr. McCLUER was a charter member of the South Pasadena Masonic Lodge. That organization conducted the funeral services at the chapel of W. A. Brown in Los Angeles, Thursday afternoon."
