Son of James Mitchell (1777-1847) and Agnes Sharp (1785-1862). Married to Sarah Johnston (daughter of John Johnston - he died 1843). James Jr came to Indiana Co when a young man, was engaged in the mercantile business for many years, and traded in live-stock. He was a member of the United Presbyterian church, and a republican, and was a prominent and energetic business man of the borough.
