Richard Adair Miles was born in Charleston, Coles, IL. The 1850 census however, shows him as an 8 year old boy. His father was Dr. James John Miles and his mother was Nancy G. Thompson-Miles. In the household in Coles, IL her mother Jean (Lowery) Thompson is living along with Caroline Harris. Dr. James John Miles died shortly after the 1850 census in 1851 from cholera. Nancy ran into some trouble and she remarried Henry R. D. Coleman in Coles, IL and they move back to Crittenden, Ky. By 1870, Richard has become a young man and is married to Malinda J. Armstrong. He still lives with his mother, Nancy G. Coleman who is a farmer. By the 1880 census, Richard is a Hotel Keeper in Ft. Bend, TX. Nancy G. Coleman, A. J. Miles, Bassett R. Miles, and Mary R. Miles are present in the home in which they share with others. Perhaps because of the Oil boom in Luling, TX., the family moved to Caldwell County, TX, where Richard and wife Lynn Miles and his son, Bassett R. Miles and Blanche Andrews Miles are buried. Other children also buried in Luling Cemetery are Nettie Kit and R A Miles.
