William D. Samman, A sensitive, good, and honest man died on Friday, December 3, 2010, while at Bay Area Hospital. William Demetrius Samman (Bill) was 84 years old. Although he suffered from leukemia, diabetes, chronic heart disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, he was a survivor, and cared for himself in his own home to the very end. He passed away peacefully and without pain. Bill was the seventh of nine children born to Antone and Carrie Samman. He was educated in Taft, Texas, and graduated from Taft High School in 1943. After graduation, he moved to Corpus Christi where he attended business school at Del Mar College. In 1944, after completion of business school, Bill took a job as a clerk-typist in the personnel department at the Naval Air Station. He was drafted into the Army in 1950. After completion of his basic training, he was sent to Korea, and assigned to the 145th Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapon Battalion. He was trained to fire the carbine rifle, the 45 caliber pistol, and the rocket launcher, but was given an assignment as the company clerk and put in charge of overseeing troop and equipment scheduling. Bill was in Korea one year and in Japan one year, and rose from the rank of PFC-1 to Sargent Major prior to his discharge from active duty in 1952. Bill returned to Corpus Christi and resumed his Navy job in personnel. In approximately 1960, he transferred to the Army and worked at ARADMAC. In the late 60's, Bill took an overseas assignment in Viet Nam. After this overseas tour, he returned to his job in personnel and retired in 1974 after having served 30 years as a civil servant. Discontented with retirement, Bill secured an overseas job with the Army in Karlsruhue Germany where he served for an additional 2 years. During his lifetime Bill was attracted to fine arts and collected many one-of-a-kind items. Over the years, he has maintained this collection in his home. Bill has designated that both his collection of fine arts and his home be sold and the proceeds be placed in an educational fund at Rice University. Bill had many acquaintances, but his closest personal friends were Ben and Eva Purcell who currently live in Arizona. Bill and the Purcells traveled many places together over the years and shared their lives until health issues restricted their ability to travel in order to see each other. They remained in touch via email, when they were no longer able to see one another. Ray Rajabar, of Houston, met Bill when Bill was receiving treatment at M. D. Anderson Hospital. A trip to the middle east market, a supper, or just a visit with family was the therapy Ray offered Bill, who needed moral support during this time. Ray's kindness continued until Bill's death. Ray made daily phone calls to Bill and even drove from Houston after work to see Bill one last time while Bill was at Bay Area Hospital.

Bill is preceded in death by his brothers: Alfred and Phillip, and his sisters: Adell and Marie.

He is survived by his brother, Joseph, and sisters: Evelyn, Victoria, and Josephine; Bill is also survived by 35 nieces and nephews and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family wishes to thank the staff who treated Bill at M. D. Anderson and his doctors: Dr. Koler, Dr. Cohn, and Dr. Mahmood. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Dr. Carmichael, who proudly proclaimed himself as the only doctor Bill never fired.

The family also wishes to thank Alicia Garcia, who worked more than 15 years as a housekeeper for Bill. She was much more than his housekeeper, and made herself available to serve all his needs and comfort him.
