Rettie was the eldest child of David Arnold and Delilah Decker, born four years before they decided to marry. She never married, honoring the request of her mother and father of all their daughters. She lived with her parents and siblings her entire life and from 1903 at Smyrna until her death, except after the death of her father. In 1917 she lived with her sister, Ida Arnold Moore and family, returning to Smyrna after 1920 where she died one cold winter evening. She was the sweetest of aunts. One of her great-nephews told that school was called off the day she was buried so that everyone in the tiny hamlet could attend "Miss Arnold's" funeral.
