Man Is Crushed Beneath Wheels Of Heavy Truck

Oliver Henry Helsel, aged 57, of East Freedom met instant death at 8.30 o'clock last night when struck by a heavy gasoline truck on route No. 22, about one mile south of East Freedom. The truck, driven by Orma William Phillips, aged 34, of 116 North Spruce street, Cumberland, Md., was a twelve-ton vehicle owned by the Petroleum Transport company and carrying 5,500 gallons of gasoline.

Helsel, the father of ten children, received fatal crush injuries of the head. Dr. Daniel M. Replogle, Blair county coroner, reported, being thrown under the wheels when struck by the right fender of the truck.

Coroner Replogle and his deputy, Edgar G. Walls, who, with Pennsylvania state police investigated the accident, learned from Joseph Hoffman of Blue Knob that he had seen Helsel a short time before the accident while driving along the road.

The driver told Pvt. Edward Buhler that he had swerved the truck to avoid hitting Helsel but that the right front headlight and fender struck the man. The track was brought to a complete stop within thirty-four feet after hitting Helsel.

State police said that dual wheels of both the truck and the semi-trailer passed over the full length of Helsel's body, crushing his head, face and chest and inflicting other injuries to the body and legs.

Police reported that Helsel was walking southward toward Claysburg and that the truck was traveling northward in the direction of Duncansville when the fatality occurred. Following the accident Phillips, the driver, after stopping within a length of the truck, waited for more than ten minute before anyone arrived on the scene. Phillips was released after questioning by the coroner.

Oliver Henry Helsel was a son of Samuel and Barbara (Feather) Helsel, the latter deceased, and was born in Freedom township, July 30, 1887, where he grew to manhood and attended the public schools. He was a member of the Leamersville Church of the Brethren.

On Dec. 18, 1907, he was united in marriage with Christina Butler. To this union ten children were born, all of whom survive: Mrs. Joseph Dively, Mrs. Ross Lingenfelter, Mrs. Herman Weyandt, Mrs. Leonard Dodson, Mrs. Ray Dibert, Mrs. James Weyandt, Mrs. Oscar Leedy and Samuel Helsel, all of Claysburg, R.D., Mrs. Blair Miller of Pavia and Miss Aldine Helsel, at home.

Also surviving are the father and these brothers and sisters: Adam of Juniata, Grant of Duncansville, R.D., Ira of Roaring Spring, Mrs. David Miller of Claysburg, Mrs. Edward Dick of Roaring Spring, Mrs. George Detterline of Claysburg, R.D., and Miss Lydia Helsel, who resides with her father at Claysburg, R.D., and seventeen grandchildren.
