U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Amherst College in 1894, became manager of a paper company and organized the Canton Lumber Company in Potsdam, New York, in 1904. He also was owner of a power plant in Higley Falls, New York, director of the Northern New York Trust Company, the Agricultural Insurance Company Watertown, New York and vice president of the Northern New York Development League, (1908-10). In 1915, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixty-fourth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Edwin A. Merritt, Jr. reelected to the Sixty-fifth Congress and to the next ten succeeding Congresses, serving until 1939. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was publisher of the Potsdam Courier-Freeman newspaper and was owner-manager of New York State Oil Company, until his death.
