Spec. 4c, U.S. Army, Vietnam War-Spec. Shelby was killed in action by small arms fire on 5-20-1969 while serving in South Vietnam with Co. A of the 2nd Battalion of the 47th Infantry Regiment of the 9th Infantry Division. Spec. Shelby started his tour of Vietnam on July 30, 1968.

He is the son of Mr. John Shelby & Mrs. Elvira Shelby Perkins of Peoria, Illinois, and the husband of Mrs. Cathy {Haynes} Shelby of 1010 Greenlawn Street in Peoria, and the father of one son, Timothy Shelby.

He also leaves two brothers, Frederick and Patrick Shelby of Peoria, and two sisters, Mrs. Cathy Pemberton, and Mrs. Viola Nelson, both of Peoria.

Spec. Shelby was a 1966 graduate of Manual H.S. and was employed by Hiriam Walker & Sons of Peoria before he enlisted in January of 1968, and did his basic training at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and his AIT Training at Fort Polk, Louisiana.

Awards: Purple Heart Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Vietnam Service Medal with One Service Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal.
