WAIVE M. SCHREIBER
Waive Mildred (Martin) Schreiber, 96, died at a local care facility on Saturday May 3, 2008. She was born to John Valentine Martin and Maude Hamilton (Mathis) Martin on December 15, 1911 on their farm on Juniper Flat, in Maupin, Or. the 11th of 13 children. She attended her first three grades at Victor school on Juniper Flat, and then moved to Boyd, Or. where her family farmed. She went to the elementry school in Boyd. To attend high school, she walked to and from Dufer High School in 1928, Salutatorian of her class.
Because of hard times, Waive was unable to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher. She worked at various jobs until the age of 24 when she met her husband, Lawrence J. Schreiber. They married on June 25, 1935 in Friend, Or., then moved to the Klamath Falls area to log. She worked as the cook in different logging camps, sometimes cooking up to 20-30 pies a day for hungry loggers, on a wood cook stove in a makeshift cooking wagon. It's been said she made the best apple pie, stuffing and sauerkraut many have ever had the good fortune to taste!
After purchasing their first farm in 1942. Lawrence and Waive moved back to Juniper Flats to raise their two children-David L. of Coer d'Alene, Id. and Kathleen M. (Schreiber) Olson of Dufer, Or. Waive helped her husband around the farm, changing miles of irrigation pipe twice a day, milking cows, feeding animals, driving wheat truck, and maintaining a huge garden from which she harvested and canned all kinds of fruits and vegtables.
In addition to her hard work, Waive enjoyed playing cards, sewing, crafts, reading, camping and fishing. She was active in Extension, the S.W.A.B (South Wasco Athletics Booster) club, Maupin PTA, was a member of the Lone Pine Grange, Secretary/Treasurer of the Juniper Flat irrigation district, and 4-H leader in the Maupin area.
In 1974 Lawrence and Waive sold their farm on the Flat. They moved to Widbey Island, Wa., where they lived for ten years, salmon fishing and enjoying their grandkids and retirement. They moved to Dallesport, Wa. In 1984. After her husband died in 1992, Waive moved to The Dalles and lived on her own, working in her yard, driving around town, and taking care of herself until she was 95 years old. She spent her last two years in a local retirement home, where she met many new friends and enjoyed reading and playing cards.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Lawrence J. Schreiber; and of her brothers; Percy Martin, Lester Martin, Lloyd Martin, Roy Martin, Charles Martin and Marion Martin; and of her sisters: Olevia Martin, Verna (Martin) Calkins, Dorothy (Martin) Nichols, Viola (Martin) McGinnis, Rose (Martin) Underhill, and Jeannette (Martin) McDonald.
She is survived by her son and daughter David and Kathleen; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be held on Saturday May 10, 2008 at 1 p.m. at IOOF Three Mile Cemetery with Asa Jenson officiating and Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangemnts. Memorials may be made to the South Wasco County Ambulance, PO Box 125, Maupin, Or, 97037.
