Grace is the eldest child of William Thomas Truman and Henrietta Strang.

Henrietta, who was from Parkville, Missouri, died at the young age of 28 years, when her daughter Grace was age 8. Grace had two younger brothers, Anderson Earl Truman (1874-1899) and Ralph Emerson Truman (1880-1962).

A few years after his wife Henrietta’s death in 1881, William Thomas Truman left his Missouri roots and moved with his children to Dallas County, Texas and settled in or near the little town of Wilmer, Texas, which, today, is on the southern border of the City of Dallas. He remarried in 1886 to a widow named Susan Margaret Clack Hurst, who already had five Hurst children. The combined Truman and Hurst families started their lives together with 8 children. William and Susan eventually had six additional children together, who were half-siblings to Grace.

Grace, the oldest child, lived with the family in Wilmer until she was married in 1890 to James Gillum Summer, who was a farmer by trade. Her two brothers continued to live in the combined family, which moved from Wilmer to Lone Oak, Hunt County, Texas (about 65 miles northeast) some time between 1890 and 1894. Grace’s brother Earl died in Hunt County at age 25 and is buried near Lone Oak. Her other full brother Ralph Emerson Truman went to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY and became a career army officer, rising to the rank of Major General.

U.S. Census records reveal the following. In 1900 Grace and James lived on a farm that they owned near Wilmer. Living with them were their first four children: Harry (age 9), Anne M (age 7), Lucille (age 4), Adda (age 2). In 1910 they still lived on a farm in Dallas County that they owned (but it was mortgaged). All six of their children lived with them, including the first four listed above and their last two, Arthur L and Homer, who were ages 9 and 2 at the time. In 1920, Grace and James still lived in Dallas County on a farm, but their two eldest children had left the nest.

Grace’s husband James G Summer died in 1923 at the age of 54.

The family photo on this page, which was taken in 1901, was preserved in the Truman family by Martha Ann Truman Swoyer, a daughter of John Vivian Truman (brother of President Harry S Truman). It was provided to the Harry S Truman Library and Museum and can be viewed on their website. The children are identified in the caption on the photo. There are only five because Grace’s youngest child was not born until 1908.

Grace’s father, William Thomas Truman, is the brother of John Anderson Truman, the father of President Harry S Truman. Therefore, Grace and her two brothers and her six half-siblings are first cousins of the President.

Grace lived in the Dallas area for the rest of her life. Her death certificate states that when she died in 1955, she had lived there for 70 years. Her last address was 5113 Parkland Avenue in Dallas. She is buried next to her husband in Restland Memorial Park.
