“Fred,” as he was known, is the son of William Thomas and Susan Margaret Clack Truman. He was born of the second marriage for both parents. William was born in Jackson County, Missouri, and married a local girl (Henrietta Strang of Parkville, MO). They had three children before Henrietta died at the young age of 28. After a few years William decided to move his family to Texas and settled on a farm in or near the little town of Wilmer, Texas in 1885. Wilmer is on the southern edge of Dallas County. In 1886 William remarried; his bride, like him, was a widow. Susan Clack was born in Tennessee and came to Texas with her first husband, Houston Freeman Hurst (1851-1884), but he died at age 33 after they had five children.

The marriage of William Thomas Truman and Susan Clack produced, over the years, six additional children, of which Willard Fred Truman was the second. Both Fred (born 1890) and his older brother, Thomas Elmer Truman (1888), were born in Wilmer. Their half-siblings from their parents’ first marriages also lived with the family during this time. These were Grace Truman (born 1872), Earl A Truman (1874), and Ralph Emerson Truman (1880) from William Thomas Truman’s first marriage, and William Hurst (1875), Mary Jane Hurst (1876), Amy Elizabeth Hurst (1879), John Marion Hurst (1881), Flora Houston Hurst (1884) from Susan Margaret Clack’s first marriage.

At some time between 1890 and 1894 the family moved from Wilmer about 60 miles northeast to another farm in or near Lone Oak, Texas in Hunt County. Grace Truman, the eldest child of the combined families, did not move with them. She was married in 1890 to James Gillum Summer and began her new life in the Dallas area. The next child, born in 1891, possibly in Lone Oak, was Martha L “Mattie” Truman. Then came another girl, Willie Myra Truman, born 1894 in Lone Oak, followed by Anna Mae Truman, born 1896 in Lone Oak, and Susan Alice Truman (1898). Tragedy struck in 1899 as Earl A Truman died at about age 25. He is believed to be the “A E Truman” buried at Hooker Ridge Cemetery near Lone Oak, Texas.

The family moved again in 1908 from Lone Oak to a the newly established town of Bomarton, Texas, about 180 miles west of Dallas. The Hurst children had all left the nest by this time and were not involved in the move. Also, Martha L “Mattie” Truman was married to Ira Rudd in Hunt County and stayed there. The family initially lived on a rented farm in Baylor County near Bomarton. But in 1912 more sad news came from Hunt County that Mattie died at age 21. She was also buried at Hooker Ridge Cemetery.

There is ample evidence in clippings from the Baylor County Banner newspaper that the Trumans were well known in the community and participated actively. Both Fred and Elmer played on the Bomarton baseball team and Fred was elected manager of the team in 1915 at age 25. Fred was married to Vera Blanche Brawner there in 1916. A family business, the Truman Brothers Dry Goods Co., was established by 1916. Numerous ads for the store appeared in the newspaper over several years through 1922. By February of 1924 the Truman Brothers had opened a second store in the town of Goree, about 5 miles southwest of Bomarton. But a disaster occurred sometime between 1924 and 1930 when a fire destroyed the family business in Bomarton.

Apparently the family did not have the resources to rebuild the business. Their livelihood gone, the family began to disperse and seek other opportunities. By 1930 Fred and Blanche Truman and their two children had moved with Blanche’s mother to Denton, Texas, where he worked as manager of a truck line. In 1940, still living in Denton, Fred was owner/operator of a gasoline service station. He continued in that capacity in Denton until his death in 1966 at age 76. He is buried in the Roselawn Cemetery in Denton.

Fred’s father, William Thomas Truman, is the brother of John Anderson Truman, the father of President Harry S Truman. Therefore, Fred and his siblings are first cousins of the President. When Harry S Truman became President of the United States upon the death of Franklin Roosevelt in 1945, the Baylor County Banner published an article that remembered the Trumans who had once lived among them. The article mentioned that Fred Truman was pictured in a recent issue of the Denton Record-Chronicle with an interview regarding his association with the new President.
