Edwin M. Schmitz, 86, R. 1, New Holstein, died Sunday at Calumet Memorial Hospital, Chilton, following an apparent heart attack at home.
He was born in Marytown on Jan. 8, 1890, a son of Mathias and Margaret Boehnlein Schmitz. He attended schools at Marytown. On May 29, 1923 he married Alvina Mertens at St. Anna. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1973.
Mr. Schmitz was a farmer and carpenter in the New Holstein area the past 53 years. He was a veteran of World War I, serving as a private in the US Army in France with the 163rd Transportation Co. from Sept, 25, 1918 to June 16, 1919. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, New Holstein, and its Holy Name Society; the New Holstein American Legion Post, and Calumet County Barracks 2205, World War I Veterans.
Survivors include his widow; six daughters, Mrs. Willard (Frances) Ninmer and Mrs. Jerome (Helen) Reinl, both of New Holstein, Mrs. Carl (Margaret) Gebhart, R. 2, Chilton, Mrs. Gregory (Genrose) Schwarz, R. 1, New Holstein, Mrs. Melvin (Agnes) Hanke, R. 1, Kiel, and Miss Marion Schmitz, at home; 22 grandchildren and three great grandchildren, and three sisters, Sister Agnes Marie Schmitz, St. Joseph Spring Farm, Fond du Lac, Mrs. Ambrose Sukowaty, St. Nazianz, and Mrs. August Kramer, Devils Lake, N. D. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
