John was born 6 Aug 1825 in Limestone Washington Co. Tennessee.

On 9 Oct 1846 John L. married Nancy B. McCracken in Washington Co. Tennessee.

He moved to Johnson County Iowa in the fall of 1850 before moving to Iowa County in 1851. By 1881 John owned 185 acres of farm tilled land and 26 acres of timber land. John can be found in the 1860,1870, 1880, 1900 US census and 1885, 1895 Iowa state census. He was the census enumerator in 1860 and in 1880.

Between 1847 and1865, John and Nancy had 11 children.

John served the community of North English as a teacher, school superintendent, school board member, pastor, Bishop and elder in the Christian church. He served as the Iowa county surveyor from 1862 until 1865. John was listed as a republican representative of the Sixteenth General Assembly of Iowa from 1852-1854. From 1 Jan 1876 to 13 Jan 1878 John served on General Assembly House Agriculture, and General Assembly House Schools.

John L. died 3 July 1902 in North English Iowa and was buried in North English Cemetery.
