Sarah Howard was born in England June 21, 1847. She was christened at St. Michael's, Ashton Under Lyne, on August 15, 1847. Her Father was Samuel Howard, baptised on 14 Sep 1809, St George, Manchester, England. He was a coal miner. The 1851 census describes Sarah's family: her mother, Betty, is listed as a "miner's wife", born in Bradshaw, Lancashire in 1813. Her eldest sister, Mary, 24, (b. 1827), was a weaver on a powerloom. Her brother, John, 17, was a coal miner. Sisters Betsey, 10, and Alice, 9, worked in a cotton piece factory. Thomas, 6, and Sarah, 4, are listed as scholars. Samuel and Thomas, both 2, have no "job". The two eldest children are from Tottington, Lancashire. All the younger ones were born in Bradshaw, Lancashire.

Sarah married William Horsfall, (b.1839), in 1866 at St. Michael and all Angels Church in Ashton Under-Lyne. Their son, William, was born in November, 1867. At the time of William's birth, the family lived at Millbrook, Cheshire. (Son, William, many years later became a well known Oregon pioneer doctor). In 1871, (some census records say 1870), together with 4 year old William, they moved to the USA.

William entered the seminary in the US. In 1880 he was a missionary in the very SE corner of Kansas, in Baxter Springs, Cherokee County. By the Fall of 1882 Sarah and family, moved to Miles City, Montana. Rev. William celebrated the first Episcopal service in Billings, Montana in 1882. Soon the family moved again to Newport, OR (for Rev. William's health), then to Marshfield, OR (old name for Coos Bay) in 1889. This same year her husband was named the Dean of the Episcopal Church of SW Oregon.

When the Horsfalls arrived on the south coast in 1889 as a missionary family, they found no permanent church buildings in the 2,400 square miles district. Rev. William soon began plans for such buildings, and the cornerstone of St John's church, Bandon, was laid in 1893. The building was sited high on a windy bluff overlooking the river and bustling little town. By 1898 St John's by the Sea was the second largest Episcopal mission in the district.

William Horsfall served as missionary and Dean of the Southern Convocation 1889-1918. The Horsfalls made their retirement home in Bandon at the site of the present high school. In 1921 Rev. William's estate donated the lots where St John's now stands, and the building of 1893 was moved to the site.

Sarah was widowed in 1921.

Sarah died on 22 Jan 1935.
