Arthur and his wife Lucetta Stewart met while in teacher's college in Illinois. Before 1888 they moved to La Cygne, KS, where Arthur taught school for a time and took up farming. After retiring from farming, he moved to Amsterdam, MO, in 1915, where he bought and managed rental property. Both he and Lucetta were active Methodists.
