ESSIE P. PENCE BIVENS was the daughter of William Landley "Lan" Pence Sr. and Minnie Elizabeth Flake Pence. Essie was born on April 6, 1911 and her mother Minnie died the next year on September 25, 1912. Essie's Dad, Lan married twice after Minnie's death and Essie was one of 19 known children.

Essie was married to Howard Nelson Bivens, son of William H. and Cecilya Day Bivens, on 18 March of 1930. They were the parents of James Elwood, Linda Sue, Rodney Lee, Ronald Adrian and Wendall Bruce Bivens. At some point Essie and Howard were divorced.

Essie was a resident of Vanceburg, Lewis County, Kentucky, but had lived in Mansfield, Ohio for 17 years before her death.

Essie attended the Open Bible Church in Mansfield and she enjoyed crafts and quilting.

Essie died at MedCentral Health System/Mansfield at the age of 90 on May 9, 2001. She was buried in the Black Oak Cemetery, Vanceburg, Lewis County, Kentucky.

MANSFIELD, OHIO: ESSIE P. PENCE, 90, of 642 Clifton Blvd. passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2001 at MedCentral Hospital.

She was born April 6, 1911, to the late Lan and Elizabeth Flake Pence in Boyd County, Kentucky. Mrs. Bivens was a former resident of Vanceburg, Kentucky and had resided in Mansfield for the past seventeen years. She attended the Open Bible Church. She will be deeply missed and always remembered for her love and kindness. Essie was well-known to many for her quilting and crafts. She leaves cherished memories to many, including her children.

She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law; James and Janice Bivens of Mansfield, Ronald and Martha Bivens of Midland, Ohio, and Rodney Lee and Jane Bivens of Dayton, Ohio; one daughter, Linda Sue Strickland of Berea, Kentucky; twenty one grandchildren and their spouses, Terry and Debbie Bivens, Brian and Shawnee Smith, Jeffrey and Lori Bivens, Richard and Kelly Manfrede, Darren and Angela Elliott, Randy and Theresa Elliott, Chris an Tina Elliott, Bobby and Zandra Haynes, Junior Bivens, Perry Bivens, Brian an Brenda Peterson, Andy and Tori Seimer, Jerry and Essie Seipel, Bill and Liza Case, Ronnie White, Mike and Louise White, Rick and Sherry White, Mark White, Alan Strickland, Scott and Trish Fulmer; thirty two great-grandchildren, Jason, Allison, Crystal, and Rebecca Bivens, Scott Jones, Amanda, Robert, and Michael Hayes, Bryan Watts, Kelley and Brandon Kunklers, Rodney and Christian Seipel, Kayla, Amanda and Allison Seimer, Kenneth Gamble, Brandon Peterson, Nakia, Amanda, Sara Lee, Michael, Morgan, Nikki, Pepsi, Richard, Shantel, Chad, and Mark White, Catrice Bradley, Kearstin and Jerod Fulmer; ten great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Virgil and Adrian Pence, both of Vanceburg, Kentucky and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her son, Wendall Bruce Bivens, husband, parents and fifteen brothers and sisters preceded her in death.

Friends may call at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, Friday from 5-8 p.m. Additional calling hours will be held one hour prior to services at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg, Kentucky on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Her grandson, Terry Michael Bivens, will conduct the services. Burial will be in Black Oak Cemetery in Lewis County, Kentucky.
