William James Owens, age 92, passed away gently in his sleep on March 25, 2011, several years after moving from his long time home in Nashville, TN with his wife of 67 years, Dorothy Patterson Elrod Owens, to live at the home of his daughter, Gloria Owens, in Smyrna, GA.

Bill (or earlier Willie) was born on December 16, 1918 in Toms Creek, VA to Robert Seldon and Ethyl Trina Hale Owens, was raised in Kingsport, TN, and was brother to Leon, Jerrie (deceased) and Robert (deceased).

Bill attended University of Tennessee at Knoxville and obtained a Bachelor's degree in accounting, participated in ROTC and entered the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant at the beginning of World War II. Bill reached the rank of Major, served in the Inspector General's office and was stationed in the Western Pacific by the end of the war.

Bill married Dot at the beginning of the war, and shortly after the end of the war, they had a daughter, Patricia Carol, who unfortunately died early of a hospital borne disease. Thereafter, Bill and Dot had three children, Robert Clay (now 63 and in Miami), Richard Lee (recently deceased at 59 in Nashville), and Gloria Carol (now 55 and in Smyrna, GA). He is also survived by 3 granddaughters and a grandson. After the war, Bill worked in accounting for General Shoe Company and for Johnson Freight Lines in Nashville, and then joined the State of Tennessee where he became the Director of Sales Tax until his retirement in the early 80's. In retirement, Bill enjoyed yard work and later, his morning and afternoon walks, almost to the end.

Visitation will be held at the Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home, 201 25th Ave. No., Nashville, TN beginning at 11 a.m., with a service beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 27, 2011. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m., at Evergreen Cemetery in Murfreesboro, TN. In Bill's memory, the family suggests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the charity of your choice.
