Silas was the son of Samuel and Joanna Hurd Older. Four older brothers went to war with Silas. On his return, he married Eliza Anna Todd on 18 November 1866 in Wood County, and they had Michael B. and Mary Estella. Silas was a carpenter. He died from heart trouble and Bright's Disease at the age of 72 years 1 month and 17 days.
