Barnett was the son of Samuel and Joanna Hurd Older. He was born in Athens, Ohio with siblings Mary(1823), George (1825), Caleb(1828), Harriet(1920), Sarah(1831), Jane (1832), Jonathan(1834), Emma(1835), Elizabeth(1836), Thomas (1838), Hannah(1840), Silas(1843), and Laura Lucinda(1845). He married Sarah Jane Castle on 2 October 1866 in Lucas County. They had a son, Delbert. Barnett was a saloon keeper.
