He was born the youngest child of David Vanpool and Margaret Leslie. His mother was a second cousin of President Andrew Jackson.He lived his young life near Russellville, MO. He was 20 years old when he enlisted on Nov 20, 1863. He mustered in at Benton Barricks, MO on Mar 8, 1864. as a private. He was with Co.L Regiment 12 Cav. and his papers were signed by 1st Lt. Sherman, Co A 12 Cav. MO Vol. He was examined by G.W. Grey (Examing Surgeon).He had Grey eyes and Light brown hair and fair complexion. He was 5ft 9 in tall. He was from the 5th Congressional Dist. He was in Company L, 12th Missouri Cav. He was captured at Abbyville, MS Aug 13, 1864. He was sent to Hospital 2481 on March 29, 1864 with Pneumona and was sent to Lawson Hospital April 3, 1864. He was admitted to Cahawba, Prison on Oct 19, 1864 with diarrhoea(692) and 15 returned to prison with no further record of him. Mystery: records show him Muster out role on April 9, 1866 and last paid May 1, 1864, last settled never drawn since $24.94 and bounty paid $100.00.
