Civil War Union Brigadier General. Served as General Irvin McDowell's Chief of Staff during the First Bull Run Campaign, and Chief of Staff of the Army of the Cumberland in its operations in the Western Theatre (which included the Battle of Shiloh). He was then appointed Provost Marshal General of the entire Union Army, a capacity he served to the end of the War.
