Son of Henry Abrams and Catherine Cornell, husband of Mary Jane Hendrickson, whom he married on December 26, 1847 in Hempstead, NY, and father of Abbey, Mary Amanda (married Frederick Bishop), Phebe Ann (married John Brown), Martha Jane, Charles Henry, Ernest Benjamin, Calista and Henrietta Abrams.

In January of 1882, Capt. Benjamin Abrams exchanged his sloop "Calista" for the sloop "Alice" with Captain Downs, of Patchogue.

Captain Benjamin Abrams drowned On June 8, 1882 off the Fire Island bar, while aboard the sloop "Alice". The boat capsized while entering the Fire Island Inlet on the return trip from delivering a load of oysters to Sing Sing. Capt. Abrams and his young adopted son, Joseph Augustus, were drowned. Joseph Augustus had been adopted by Capt. Abrams, a Blue Point fisherman and oysterman, from the Children's Home in Yaphank in March of 1882 and was known locally as "Little Joe". He was buried in the old cemetery at Patchogue, and five years later when his brother came looking for him, said he would remove the boy's body to his home in Kentucky.
