She was born February 28, 1917 in Minneapolis, MN, the daughter of John and Julia (Hansen) Ness. She was reared and educated at Rice Lake School number three.
She married Steve Baumgartner in 1935, in Minot. The couple lived and farmed in the Rice Lake area. In 1966, they retired from farming but continued to live on the farm. Steve died on February 20, 1977 in Minot. Hazel moved to Minot in 1980 and continued to live here until her death.
She was a former member of The Church of God in Ryder and she attended Jehovah's Witness Church in Minot.
Hazel enjoyed feeding squirrels and birds in her neighborhood.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Steve, her son, Marvin, her parents, brothers, Jim and Henry Ness; and two sisters, Anna Bluhm and Agnes Juelich.
