Granville was the son of Josiah Lewis Walters and Nancy Emmarine "Emma" Foster. He was born in Russell County, Kentucky on May 10, 1881. He passed away on February 21, 1917 in Des Moines, Iowa.

He was married to Polly Jane Wilson on December 2, 1903 in Kentucky. Granville and Polly had the following children: Ruby, Grover, Henry, and Dorothy.

Granville was said to have been a kind and caring man who was well liked.

Following Granville's death, Polly was admitted to Mt. Pleasant State Hospital as early as January 1920.
