Helen Elizabeth (Blotz) Hernes was one of 10 children (Charles, John, Esther, Mabel, Mary, Richard, Joe, Alfred, Eva) and was born to Charles William and Frances Esther Blotz in Mitchell, South Dakota. She married Eino Matt Hernes on July 4th, 1941. They moved to Berkeley, California after her sister Mary and her husband Clifford Leveque, moved to Albany, California a few years earlier because of World War II. I believe they moved to Berkeley in 1951. They have a son, David Allen [Hall] Hernes, whom they adopted at 9 months old on April 18, 1950.

She was one of four sisters who became a nurse. She was an RN at Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley, California for many years and retired around 1982 due to an injury she sustained to her knees. She had been transporting a patient in a wheelchair, and for some reason, fell into the chair and permanently injured her knees.

NOTE: Helen is my grandmother. I am David's daughter. ~Alina
