Loring Russell Cook, 87, of Elkton, passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Loring was born March 5, 1924, in Rockingham County, and was the son of the late Welty Garland and Jessie Hensley Cook. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Cook Diehl, and a daughter, Lora Cook Herring.

Loring graduated from Elkton High School and was a lifelong member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church in Elkton. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in the Atlantic Theater on Ascension Island and in Brazil. He was a lifetime member of the Gooden Brothers VFW Post 9292. After returning from service, he worked 12 years for Merck & Co. Later, he owned and operated Cook's Grocery, Cook's Drive-In and Cook's Laundromat, all in Elkton.

On April 22, 1951, he married Georgia (Cordle) Cook, who survives. He is also survived by three daughters, Alisa Smith and husband, Ken, Kama Miller, Anita Westfall and husband, Danny, and son-in-law, Jeff Herring, husband of the late Lora Herring; three granddaughters, Alexandria Michael, Brianna Herring and Kristin Herring. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2011, at the Evangelical United Methodist Church in Elkton with the Rev. Robert W. Smith Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg with military rites by Gooden Brothers VFW Post 9292.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.
