He was a son of Lieut. Col. James Mellen an officer of the line and very active in Massachusetts and elsewhere during the Revolutionary War and Elizabeth Russell. William was a steamship captain on the Hudson River - probably between Hudson and New York City. He married Lucretia Marsh on Nov. 8, 1791 at Dalton, Massachusetts. Lucretia was a daughter of Perez Marsh. She was born about 1766 possibly in Dalton, Mass. and died Dec. 21, 1854 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. William Henry Mellen and Lucretia had about ten children.
