Susannah Lane, daughter of Pleasant and Cassandra Lane, was born in Gifford County, North Carolina, December 27, 1824, and died July 16, 1913, aged 88 years, 6 months and 19 days. At the age of fourteen she moved with her parents to Henry county, Iowa, and at the age of fifteen she was united in marriage to James Coltrane, April 23, 1849. At the age of nine years she was converted and united with the M.E. church. Then, later in life, she and her husband moved their membership to the Baptist church. About twenty-seven years ago they became charter members in organizing the Friends church at Hickory Grove. She was the parent of twelve children, two of whom died in infancy. Seven are living and were present at her death and burial. They are: Nancy Clark, Lydia Lamb, Rachel Coltrane, Eliza Watson, Sarah Shelman, Cynthia Standley, John L. Coltrane. Those deceased are: William C. Coltrane, Martha J. Knowles, Macy C. Standley. She leaves forty-two grand children, seventy-three great grand children, eleven great great grand children besides a host of friends and neighbors. She has ever lived a good quiet life; Christ-like in all her ways. While her home claimed much of her time, she always found time to assist those in need. The funeral was held on the 18th at the Hickory Grove Friends church by her pastor, Rev. C. John Bowles. An offering of flowers was given by Stockport friends and others. The portion of scripture read was Isaiah the 40th chapter. Text spoken from was Amos 5:8, "Seek Him that maketh the seven star and Orin, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning."
