Carson Boyd Basnight, age 54, died at a Norfolk hospital Thursday, February 19, 1953 after a long illness.

A native of Roanoke Island, N.C., he had been a resident of Norfolk for 35 years, making his home at 4110 Wolcott Avenue.

He was the son of the late Benjamin B. Basnight and Mrs. Maude Twine Basnight.

For a number of years he was employed by the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a painter, retiring 5 years ago due to ill health. He was a member of Berkeley Avenue Baptist Church, Chesapeake Tribe 50, Improved Order of Red Men, Silver Stream Council, Daughters of Pocahantas, Edgewater Council 27, Daughters of America, Junior Order of American Mechanics, Atlantic Lodge 24, Knights of Pythias and Painter's Union Local 23.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ruby Watts Basnight; a daughter, Mrs. Ruby Basnight Gray; 3 sisters: Mrs. Lillian Johnson of Manteo, Mrs. Lennie Tillette of Wanchese and Mrs. Elona Midgette of Manns Harbor; 2 brothers: Fred O. Basnight of Manteo and Charles W. Basnight of Charlotte, N.C.; 3 grandchildren: Thomas Luther Gray, William Boyd Gray and Margaret Anne Gray.

Funeral services were conducted at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Feb. 22 by the Rev. Beecher L. Rhodes. Pallbearers were: Steve V. Edwards, W.L. Rhodes, G.E. Rhodes, Jr., R.L. Midgette, F.L. Brown and J.W. Torksey. Members of Chesapeake Lodge #50, I.O.R.M., conducted services at the grave. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
