Thomas & Elizabeth were second cousins (and spouses). They had 3 biological daughters and one adopted daughter, who was adopted some time between the 1891-1901 Censuses of Canada. She first appeared with them in 1901 as Mary B. Carter, 'Adopted Daugh [daughter]', age 17 (b. 1883 in Ontario), with 'origin' listed as French. This implies she wasn't adopted until at least age 7 (some time after 1891). She also didn't have a specific birthdate listed, just 1883, implying none of them knew it. Mary B. was gone from the household by the 1911 Census, and no further records have been found. Elizabeth's 1928 obituary stated she was survived by one daughter (Veronica); it's unclear if that meant Mary B. was also deceased by then.

THOMAS F. CARTER
An old and highly esteemed employe [sic] of the Canadian Pacific Railway died on Sunday in the person of Thomas Francis Carter, for more than 40 years on the active staff of the company. Becoming a conductor he served in this capacity on most of the lines out of Ottawa, particularly on the Imperial Limited. His courtesy and tact in dealing with the public in this capacity made many friends for himself and the company he so faithfully served. Coming to Ottawa from Carleton Place about 20 years ago he built up a wide circle of friends who will sincerely mourn his death. Surviving him are a daughter and three brothers.
