Doris Earlene Godwin Esterly (Koshers) died peacefully on Thursday, October 14, 2010, at the Nassau County Medical Center in East Meadow, New York. Her daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter, grandson, and Mr. John Marmo were at her bedside to say goodbye to this "astonishing and loving woman. She was 85 years old.
Visitation will be held on October 17, 2010, at O'Shea Funeral Home in Wantagh, New York. Viewing will be from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Services and burial will follow the morning of October 18, 2010, at the Long Island National Cemetery, Pinelawn
Doris was born in Brownfield, Texas, and later moved to Lubbock, Texas. She met William Esterly, a Sergeant in the United States Army, while working for Western Union in Oklahoma during WWII, and they were married in 1945. They moved to Richmond Hill, New York and seven years later bought a home on Long Island.
Doris continued to work for Western Union and Sarah Lee in New York City, and Food Fair Stores on Long Island. After the death of her husband, "Willie", in 1966, she started a new career with Grumman Aerospace working on the F14 in Engineering Standards and retired at the age of 65. During this time, she remarried.
She was a gift to her family and all who knew her. She adored life and lived it well. She had incredible strength and fortitude to face each and every crisis that came her way, and lived her life with love, understanding, forgiveness and a deep sense of right and wrong along with a great sense of humor. She will be missed forever.
She was preceded in death by parents; Thomas Carl Godwin and Velma Irene Edwards Godwin and brothers J.B. and James Arlen Godwin.
Doris is survived by her daughter, Jean Renee (Esterly) Maddaluno, two grandchildren, Donna Elaine Maddaluno (Marmo) and Al William Maddaluno, two great grandchildren, William Joseph and Jamie Paige Maddaluno, two brothers, Truman Dayon and Kenneth Boyd Godwin and her second husband, Louis Koshers. "Till We Meet Again"
