Gilbert was the son of Robert Young and Lydia Gould Young. On April 21, 1825 he married Amaryllis Barrett. They were the parents of Mary Rebecca, Lydia, Anne, Ruhama, Margaret, Estelle, Sarah Martha and Asa B.
