Elbert Berton Drake was born 11 Mar 1916 in Cullman County and died 18 January 1996 in the V.A. Hospital in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama. He married Lizzie Winell Stidham 13 Nov 1937 in Cullman County. They had 9 children.

He is the son of Earnest Lafayette Drake and Nancy Rowena Lambert. He is the paternal grandson of John Turner Drake and Virginia Evelyn Anderson and the maternal grandson of Louis Franklin Pierce Lambert and Margaret Missouri Williamson.

Elbert was a World War II U.S. Army Veteran. He served with the 813th Engr (AVN) BN on Okinawa during the battle of Okinawa. He went a shore with his outfit on 3 Apr 1945 the day after the U.S. Marines had landed on Okinawa. He served 9 1/2 months in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was awarded the APTO Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal.
Elbert was 28 years old when he joined the Army. He was married with a wife and 3 children ages 4, 2, and 3 months old. He could have been deferred but the war was raging in the Pacific after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He traveled to FT McClellan, Alabama and was sworn into the Army on 14 Jun 1944.
What I am proud of the most about my Daddy is that he was willing to serve his country in time of war even though he could have been deferred from serving due to age and number of children.
