The funeral service for Joseph L. Douglas, 84, former member of Muncie and Delaware County councils, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Lawrence Church. Entombment will be in Elm Ridge Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Meeks Mortuary. The Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. Thursday.
Mr. Douglas died Tuesday at Manatee Hospital, Bradenton, Fla.
Mr. Douglas, the son of James and Elizabeth (Burns) Douglas, was born in Muncie and attended St. Lawrence School. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He was an Army veteran of World War I.
Active in Democrat politics, he served as city council member in the 1940s. He was on the Delaware County Council in the 1960s. He also served on the Muncie Community Schools Board of Trustees from 1949 to 1953. He was president of the board in 1951 and 1952.
Until his retirement in 1962, Mr. Douglas was employed at Warner Gear for 32 years. Earlier, he was employed at Warner Corp. He moved to Bradenton in 1972. While at Warner Gear, he was president of Local 287 AFL-CIO.
Mr. Douglas was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Ola Rae; four daughters, Mrs. Malcolm (Patricia E.) Cox, Monticello, Mrs. Robert (Laura) Ellis, Bradenton, Fla., Mrs. Joanna Whitcomb and Mrs. William (Marian) Wade, both of Muncie; a son, Jerry, Muncie; a sister, Miss Myrtle V. Douglas, Muncie; 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
