He was born 83 years ago, a son of the late Richard and Sarah McDonald Bates, in Glenmore, Musquodoboit. A lifelong and highly respected citizen of the Musquodoboit Valley, he was a successful farmer who on retirement about four years ago moved from the old homestead to the village of Middle Musquodoboit, He was a member of the United Church.
Surviving beside his wife, the former Florence Mabel Corbett with whom he had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in September, are three daughters and four sons - Luella, Mrs. Paul Seyler, Omaha, Neb.; Hazel, Mrs. Howard Hamilton, Bertha, Mrs. David Ross; Ross, Charles, Earl, Bernard, all of Middle Musquodoboit; also two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Pulsifer, Brookvale, Musquodoboit; Mrs. Angelina Campbell, Greenfield, Mass."
