Michael was one of nine full brothers who served for the Union in the Civil War in units from Pennsylvania. Michael enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War as a Private in the 49th Infantry, Company I, P.V.I., Pennsylvania. He mustered out on 15 July 1865.
