Julia Harkey is Taken by Death After Being Ill Several Weeks
Resided In Hillsboro and Irving For Many Years

Mrs. Julia Harkey died at her home in Hillsboro at half past two, Friday afternoon, after an illness of several weeks duration. Her last illness was from a complication of diseases incident to age and as a result of a severe attack of pneumonia suffered three years ago. She never entirely recovered from that attack and when the later trouble developed; her constitution was not strong enough to withstand the attack.

Julia McClure was born at Marietta, Ohio, on October 14, 1847, and was therefore aged 77 years, 4 months and 13 days at the time of her death. She came to Illinois at the age of three years with her father, the late W. D. McClure and his family which consisted of four sons and eight daughters. Of these, only one brother, James McClure of Dahlgren, Illinois survives.

The family settled at McLeansboro but later moved to Irving when she subject of this sketch was a young lady.

She was united in marriage to John C. Harkey of Irving on September 11, 1879, and they resided there until his death which occurred on December 11, 1903. To this union were born three daughters, Ella, who died at the age of one year, and Misses Bessie and Ruby, both of Hillsboro and one son Ray Harkey of St. Louis.

Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Harkey and family moved to Hillsboro in 1912 and she had made her home here ever since that time.

Mrs. Harkey was converted and joined the Presbyterian Church when she was a young girl. She became a member of the Irving Church and later of the Hillsboro Presbyterian Church. She took an active interest in the church and was a regular attendant at all of the services as long as her health permitted. She also belonged to the Hillsboro Women's Relief Corps.

She was of a modest and retiring disposition and loved her home life best but she always willingly shared in the activities of church, Corps and community and performed those duties in a quiet unassuming manner but with the greatest of care and efficiency.

She succeeded in rearing a family of great usefulness in the community where they live and in such a way that they have the high respect of all their acquaintances, even as she enjoyed the same standing in the communities where she had resided over a period of many years.

Funeral services were held at the family residence at two o'clock Sunday afternoon with Rev. Alfred M. Eella, pastor of the Hillsboro Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment was made at Irving Cemetery.
