William H. Payne, familiarly known as "Uncle Billy," passed to his reward June 1st, 2 p.m., at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W.W. Williams in Tuscumbia. He was born August 10, 1833, being eighty-seven years old at his death.

"Uncle Billy" was a pioneer Baptist preacher. Numerous people of the older generation can recall seeing him in the pulpit when they were children. Few people attain his age and one can the more realize his age when it is noted that he was about twenty-eight years old at the beginning of the Civil War. He served during the war and was drawing a liberal pension at the time of his death.

He was married three times, the first time to Miss Elizabeth J. Karr, who died Oct. 11, 1913. To this union nine children were born, as follows: Malisa J., Mary F., Charity E., W.S., Geo. F., Sarah A., E.A., Margaret S., and James G. Four of the children, Mary F. Williams, W.S., Margaret and James G. survive him.

In 1914 he was married to Miss Sarah Jane Kneisley and after her death he married Elizabeth Goodwin, who also preceded him to the grave.

Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist Church Thursday, June 2, by Eld. W.C. Self and burial was in the Tuscumbia Cemetery.
