Eli came from Frederick County, Virginia to Greene County, Indiana by way of Ohio with his parents and siblings around 1833, making him a teenager at the time. The family settled in Stafford Township on the land where his parents are buried. He acquired 120 acres of land in Greene County, issued 1 Oct 1840. He was a farmer all his years. He first married Harriet Garrett, his first cousin on his mother's side, whose family had moved to Indiana about 10 years before Eli's family moved. Harriet died in 1850 while their children were less than 7 years old and was buried on the George Good land with other family members. Eli then married Harriet Hart in 1856.
