John was the son of Esybous and Jency Jane Buckner Maynor, and some of his siblings were William, Nancy, Diana, Jobe Allen, Garrett and Burrow.

John married Nancy Downey on 26 December 1867 in McMinn County, TN, and they were parents of 11 children, 9 of whom were still living in 1900. They were Lutisha J., James M., Lizey C., Mary C ., George W., John, Robert L., Samuel, and Nanny.

John and Nancy lived in McMinn County, Tennessee until about 1882 when they relocated to Jackson County, Alabama.

The Maynor family came out of Patrick County, Virginia and their plantation was located where the Fairy Stone State Park is now. John's father, Esybous, was the son of Isaiah and Elizabeth Nunn (married first a Stone) Maynor.
