Katharina was a daughter of Filip Wendling and Elisabetha Margaretha Zerfas. She was born in Illischestie, Bukovina, Austria. On February 11, 1848 in Milisauti, Bukovina, Austria, she married Jacob Ast. They lived for a time in Illischestie and had 14 children there: Friedrich, Johann, Anna, Johann, Phillip (Find-a-Grave memorial number 20862158), Caroline (Find-a-Grave memorial number 21467578), Katharina (Find-a-Grave memorial number 22629627), Jacob, Frank, Jacobina K., Elisabeth (Find-a-Grave memorial number 48423036), Joseph, Ludwig "Louis", and Edward "Adam". In 1888 Katharina and Jacob and most of their surviving children all migrated to Ellis County, KS, where they settled amongst other immigrant Bukovinans.
