He was born June 10, 1920, in Richhill Township, Greene County, a son of Samuel and Frances Kerr Whipkey, and had resided in Beallsville for 38 years prior to moving to Cameron in 1998.
Mr. Whipkey was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant in Btry B, 429th FA Bn, and received the Good Conduct Medal, Philippines Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star, American Theater Service Medal, Asia-Pacific Theater Service Medal with one bronze star and the World War II Victory Medal.
He was a life member of Hancock-McCune American Legion Post 705 in Centerville.
Prior to retiring in 1982, he was employed by Columbia Gas Co. as a leakage inspector for 41 years.
He was a member and past president of Columbia Gas Quarter Century Club.
Mr. Whipkey and his wife, Twila Ora Yoho, who survives, celebrated 65 years of marriage on January 24, 2007.
He was the last of his immediate family.
Deceased are his son, Ronald S. Whipkey, who died August 2, 1996; four brothers, Paul, Fred, Warren and John Whipkey; and four sisters, Lena Hennen, Freda Brandt and Louise and Dorothy Whipkey.
